Dear Parents, Welcome to grade 5. We are excited to be working with your children this year. We will email a weekly update at the end of every week to keep you informed about our progress. We enjoyed meeting many of you at the “Meet the Teacher” night last night. If you were unable to attend, the information we shared last night is attached to this email. Please also read the attached letter about Freshgrade. The website also has the information we shared. Math: We have started this year with a group discussion around having a Growth Mindset and how none of us are born with or without a “math brain” but that we can all learn math and be successful at it. We watched this video: https://vimeo.com/177320916 and had further discussions around perseverance and the power of the word “yet”. (ie: I don’t understand this….yet). We will be spending the next few weeks looking at place value and the role it has in our mathematical understanding. Science: A visit from an entomologist started our year off with a bang! We had the opportunity to be scientists and study ant behaviour while recording data on a real-life data collection document. We will continue to explore/review scientific method over the coming weeks as we begin our exploration into Wetland biology. Humanities: This week in humanities we spent time establishing routines and getting to know one another. Students will be engaging in daily independent reading activities and we spent time reading and sharing. Students completed a reading survey and wrote letters about themselves to their future self. We started our first class read aloud, “Tuck Everlasting”. It was a busy week with a trip to the Weaselhead and an introduction to everything that is coming up in grade 5! Next week we will be reading, writing poetry, and learning about Canada. Waterton: 5.3 will be off to Waterton on Wednesday. Please take some time this weekend to review the packing list so no one is scrambling on Tuesday night to put their bag together. It looks like it will be warm, but we could anticipate a quick change in the weather, so it will be important to have appropriate layers. Please note that students DO NOT need to bring rubber boots or a sleeping mat. 5.4 still requires a couple volunteers to join us in September. If you are available Sept. 20-22 please let Mrs. Stevenson know. [email protected] Dragonboating on Monday afternoon. Students will need to be prepared to walk over and spend a few hours on the water. The PE team recommends bringing a change of clothes, water bottle and a snack. Sunscreen and hats will be important! General: Vaccination information went home today with 5.3. Please review the information and send back forms early next week. Fun Lunches will begin on Sept. 13th. Look for information on a blue sheet coming home today and Monday and emails on how to participate.
