Welcome to grade 5. We are excited to be working with your children this year. We will email a weekly update at the end of every week to keep you informed about our progress. This first email is a long one, please anticipate shorter emails in the future! We enjoyed meeting many of you at the “Meet the Teacher” night last night. If you were unable to attend, the information we shared last night is attached to this email. The grade 5 website also has the information we shared. grade5connects.weebly.com Please complete the parent survey if you haven’t done so already.

[email protected] or [email protected] Friday, Sept. 14: No School Monday, Sept 24 - Wednesday, Sept. 26: Camp Math: We have started this year with a group discussion around having a Growth Mindset and how none of us are born with or without a “math brain” but that we can all learn math and be successful at it. We watched this video: https://vimeo.com/177320916 and had further discussions around perseverance and the power of the word “yet”. (ie: I don’t understand this….yet). We will be continuing our investigations around having a growth mindset in mathematical learning as well as getting comfortable with our daily math starters over the coming weeks. Parent Math Corner: If you are interested in learning more about the growth mindset work we are undertaking, please visit the YouCubed Parent website. This site is a great place to go for information on ways to approach helping your child develop their mathematical fluency and to support the work we are doing at school. Jo Boaler (Stanford University) is at the forefront of this work and provides excellent resources for parents and teachers. We reference her work often. Science: This week we set up our field journals and discussed our theme for the year of being an explorer. Some of our explorations will be based off the book “How to Be an Explorer of the World”. We also began to explore ecosystems by doing some food web activities to being our wetland unit. Humanities: This week in humanities we spent time establishing routines and getting to know one another. Students will be engaging in daily independent reading activities and we spent time reading and sharing. Students completed a reading survey and wrote letters to their future self. We began our exploration of Canadian identity by examining aspects of our own identity. Students created an identity web and personal coat of arms. Next week we will look at how our names contribute to our identity and begin looking at our personal history, and exploring how where we come from helps make us who we are. Agenda: As we discussed in the Meet the Teacher evening presentations, we will be using a digital agenda. Students will be actively writing items in their own digital agendas from information given by the teachers in the morning - this way students get into the habit of adding items into their agenda. Stay tuned early next week to be shared into your child’s document. Health: Human sexuality lessons will be taught later in the year. Please sign accordingly (participation in the lessons or exemption). See attachment for a digital copy, and return to the homeroom teacher. PE Students in 5.4 need helmet for class on Tuesday and Thursday next week.
