Here is the weekly update!
Stephen’s Backpack:Last week we included two google doc links in the weekly update regarding donations for Stephen’s backpack. All students now have access to these documents through FreshGrade, but here are the links again in case you haven’t had a chance to sign up. Donations are due by Thursday, Dec. 14th. 5.4 5.3 Looking Ahead to Important Dates: Dec 13: 5.3 to Masters Gallery, morning only (EXPO Trip) - Will need parent volunteers (2 ish) Dec 13: EVENING - Screening of Bee Nation documentary (see Connect Film Festival for more information). Event is open to all but you must sign up through Eventbrite. Dec 18-21: Peace Festival Dec 22: PD Day (No School) Dec 23-Jan 7: Winter Break Jan. 10: Glenbow/Fort Calgary (EXPO Trip ) - Will need parent volunteers (Lots-5 per homeroom!) Jan. 25: 5.4 to Masters Gallery, morning only (EXPO Trip) - Parent volunteers have been found Math: This week we reviewed two strategies in multiplication and students were given some practice problems to do in their book. We also finally finished the proofs we started a few weeks ago. There are some new additions to FreshGrade, so please check it with your child over the next few days. There will be another multiplication check-in next week. We may move on to an introduction to division before winter break. Science: Students worked on their weather instruments this week and there were many a’ha moments! There were some very innovative designs, and most of them worked (with some tweaking, sharing ideas etc.). Students created a short video or google doc to explain what weather phenomenon their instrument measured and described what unit of measurement they created that matched their device. These should be mostly posted to FreshGrade, or very close to being posted. Students were very focused on these projects and I was impressed with how much they accomplished in a relatively short time frame. This week coming up we will be doing a fabric testing experiment and discussing the scientific process in more detail. Humanities: This week we finished two regions. Students learned about the Appalachian and the Canadian Shield. Next week we will spend time learning about the The Arctic Region, which is the last region. We will then begin a deeper inquiry into the issues people face within the regions. We continue with our reading of Rain, Reign.

It’s hard to believe that it is already the first week of December! Here is the weekly update:
Looking Ahead to Important Dates Dec 8: PD Day (No School) Dec 13: 5.3 to Masters Gallery, morning only (EXPO Trip) - Will need parent volunteers (2 ish) Dec 18-21: Peace Festival Dec 22: PD Day (No School) Dec 23-Jan 7: Winter Break Jan. 10: Glenbow/Fort Calgary (EXPO Trip ) - Will need parent volunteers (Lots!) Jan. 25: 5.4 to Masters Gallery, morning only (EXPO Trip) - Will need parent volunteers (2 ish) Humanities: We finished up with the Cordillera region and moved onto the East Coast. Students completed a brief exploration of The Great Lakes region and began learning about the Appalachian region. We continued to read, “Rain, Reign,” and as we read this novel we will be doing some word study, looking at spelling patterns and learning personal strategies to help with spelling. This week we reviewed the parts of speech, and learned about homonyms, idioms and palindromes. Students also started a new creative writing piece, called “Mission Impossible.” Next week we will study 2 more Canadian regions, read our novel and build personal spelling strategies. Math: We had a jam packed week in math. We continued to work on our multiplication skills by finishing up our proofs as well as doing some practice problem solving. We also learned about the lattice method for multiplication. Check out the below links if you are curious! (you could also have your child teach you!). Many students found this to be a more efficient strategy to use, while others still prefer the visual layout of the array method. We also talked about the importance of estimating your product before you solve to ensure that your final product is ‘reasonable’. Please continue to encourage your child to practice their multiplication facts. Lattice Video (Instructional) Lattice Video (Explanation) Science: We finished up our weather observations this week and learned about a few different tools for measuring weather. Over the next few weeks students will design, build and test an instrument that will measure one element of weather. Stephen’s Backpack: This year Connect is, once again, filling backpacks for the “Stephen’s Backpack” initiative. The even homerooms (5.2 or 5.4) fill for a boy in grade 5. The odd homerooms (5.1 or 5.3) fill for a girl in grade 5. Each homeroom will fill one backpack. Please see the links below for additional information and to see a list of required items 5.4 5.3 |
