Looking Ahead:
March 23: PD Day March 24-April 8: Spring Break! April 9-18: Indigenous Artists in Residence April 10: Telus Spark* April 18: Heritage Park (5.3 AM, 5.4 PM)* April 19: Pow Wow April 25: Fort Calgary and St. Patrick’s Island: ALL DAY (both classes)* *Volunteers are still required Looking WAY ahead: Spring Camps May 9-12: 5.3 at Fort Steele May 12-15: 5.4 at Fort Steele **We are beginning to compile a list of potential parent volunteers. Please let Erin or Gail know if you are able to come on this trip. Reminders: *Please send back report card folders and field trip consent forms that were sent home last week. Spring Break and iPads The tech team at the school has requested that all student devices remain at school over the break. They will be doing some work on them. Therefore, no iPads will be going home for spring break. Humanities This week we wrapped up our, “City of Ember,” novel study. Most students completed their booksnaps and vocabulary activities. A few may still be working on this next week and are encouraged to work at home if they are feeling behind. We watched the movie and compared the two forms as part of our wrap up. Most students agreed that the book was way better! Next week we will be beginning our look at the stories of Canada’s First Nations groups and starting some writing projects. Math This week students designed tessellations with translations and reflections. Next week students will be continuing to work on their oil pastels and watercolor reflection tessellations. Science This week students worked hard to complete their Ember inventions. They created a google slides reflection about their building process and received peer feedback to improve their work. Next week students will be conducting a home study about reading a household electrical meter and efficiency labels on electrical appliances. They will also participate in an electromagnet lab.

Reminders: *Please send back the research consent form sent home last week regarding a study we are participating in around media and food choices. We will start the lessons this week. If your child does not bring the form back, they will not be part of the pre and post lesson surveys but will still take part in the healthy eating lessons.
*Watch for an email from the office on Monday regarding sign-up for student-led conferences this week. Looking ahead: March 12: Report Cards go home March 15&16: Student Led Conferences (Thurs. 4pm-8pm, Fri. 8am-1pm) March 23: PD Day-No School March 24-April 8: Spring Break! April 9-18: Indigenous Artists in Residence April 10: Telus Spark* April 18: Heritage Park (5.3 AM, 5.4 PM)* April 19: Pow Wow April 25: Fort Calgary and St. Patrick’s Island: ALL DAY (both classes)* *Volunteers are still required Looking WAY ahead- Spring Camps! May 9-12: 5.3 at Fort Steele May 12-15: 5.4 at Fort Steele **We are beginning to compile a list of potential parent volunteers. Please let Erin or Gail know if you are able to come on this trip. Math:This week, students completed their quadrilateral analysis including peer feedback loop. They began to look at transformations of shapes using pattern blocks. They will continue to explore tessellations over the coming week and move into 3D objects before the break. Science: This week students worked very hard on their Ember Inventions. They are really starting to take shape and students are being very thoughtful and deliberate with their design and circuit choices. This coming week they will co-create an assessment criteria and begin to work on a google slide show of their building progress which they will be excited to share with you at student-led conferences on Thursday or Friday. They also participated in an exciting lab where they tested a variety of materials to determine if they were conductors or insulators. Humanities: We finished with the Metis Road Case this week. Students learned about the Red River Jig, body percussion and found instruments. Next week we will begin our inquiry into the stories of the First Nations. We also made a lot of progress with, “The City of Ember.” Several students are finished the book, and all students will be finishing up on Monday. We will complete some wrap up activities, finish work on vocabulary & booksnaps and compare the book and the movie in the upcoming week. Here is a look at what we were busy working on this week! Thanks to those of you who were able to join us on Tuesday for our EXPO day! Our next EXPO trips are April 10th, April 18th and April 25th. If you are able to join us as a volunteer please let us know.
Looking Ahead: March 5-9: City of Ember Invention Build Week - students must bring their materials on Monday to begin this project. We will provide the materials they need for their circuits (wires, batteries, motors/lightbulbs). March 12- Report Cards go home March 15&16 Student Led Conferences (Thurs. 4pm-8pm, Fri. 8am-1pm) March 23- April 8- Spring Break Humanities: This week we continued our exploration of Metis culture and music. We went to the Military Museum and participated in a program that examined the contributions the indigenous community has made to the Canadian military. We are approaching the halfway point of, “The City of Ember.” Our goal is to wrap up all novel study activities before spring break. Students have been instructed to read to the end of chapter 1 this weekend and may do so by listening to the audio book, as the books weren’t sent home. The audiobook links are on freshgrade. Students have been working on vocabulary activities and were introduced to booksnaps. Booksnaps use technology to help students make connections with the book and show their understanding of what they are reading. Your child may ask you for permission to install an app called, “Bitmoji.” This is an app that allows them to create a cartoon avatar of themselves, which they can use with google slides in their booksnaps. It is commonly used by those with snapchat, but we aren’t using the snapchat app. Bitmoji has no messaging or chat capabilities on its own. This app has a 12+ rating and is an app that requires a parent conversation and permission. Please refer to the link to help with your decision. It is not a requirement, as we have a lot of other emoji options to help us express ourselves. https://www.saferkid.com/app-reviews-for-parents/bitmoji-keyboard-your-avatar-emoji Math: This week students completed their Olympic graphing and began a graphing analysis exercise making inferences and predictions about the information presented in the graphs. Students also worked on analyzing their quadrilateral art for a number of different geometrical criteria this week and posted it to Freshgrade if they were complete. Science: This week students toured the new MRU Library and Maker Space. They also had the opportunity to work with electrical circuitry kits to expand upon their knowledge of circuits and experiment with some different materials. Students completed their circuitry video check-in by utilizing feedback from Ms. Kwong and peers and resubmitting a secondary video with any information they may have left out or not expanded upon the first time. These should all be uploaded onto Freshgrade. Check with your child as some of them decided to take their iPads home to work on the voice recording at home today (or over the weekend as time permits). Looking Ahead Tuesday, Feb 27: EXPO Military Museum and MRU MakerSpace Friday, March 2: No School Humanities We wrapped up our learning with the Olympics this week. Students read or listened to, “The City of Ember” and completed some vocabulary exercises. We also had a look at the contents of the,“Metis Roadcase,” that is on loan from the National Music Center. Next week we will spend a great deal of time learning about the Metis and will continue with our novel study. Math: Last week students continued to work on their double bar graphs using Olympic data. They will wrap those up this coming week. Students also began a quadrilateral shape art representation which they will analyze for a number of different geometrical criteria this week. Science: This week students worked with their “City of Ember” job group and began preliminary plans for the devices they will build in the coming weeks. They have started a materials list which should include things readily available in the recycling bin at home or at school. We will provide the items necessary for the circuits. This coming week they will do some self evaluation work of their circuit check-in after carefully reading and taking into consideration the first round of teacher feedback. |
